Galvenised fermenters

Post by jonnybeer » Thu Oct 18, 2007 11:55 am

Hello all, it may be a silly question but can the wort be fermented in galvanised containers without picking up some off flavours.

I've access to 1 mtr. lengths of new 18 inch diameter seamless ducting tube and an expert welder.

Might try and make a conical fermenter in the material is suitable.

Any help or advice appreciated.

Thanks. j.b.

Thanks DaaB, thought it sounded too good to be true.

I'll take your advice and keep the hard earned.

DaaB's right, the galv would have to be ground off, and the area painted with a cold galvanising treatment (e.g Galvafroid) after welding.

I've pulled a few of those old water tanks out Daab, you wouldn't want to brew in them!

I have seen large galv vessels lined with layers of fibreglass matting and epoxy resin made specifically for potable water, I guess that would be okay for a fermenter.
