MASH EFFICIENCY

With conflicting debates can any one tell me when do you take an hydrometer reading after the mash before the sugars are added or after the boil when the sugars have been added to work out the mash efficiency. cheers s.s. :bonk

Mash efficiency is after the mash, before the sugars are added, but when most people quote efficiency on this forum, it refers to brewhouse efficiency which is after the boil...

retourrbx has it spot on

you find your mash efficency if you want to improve or look at you sparging.

the brew house efficency is the whole process mash sparge boil you need both to find out where efficency is low though

for example my mash eff is usaully ~90% but due to losses in the boil and to the hops - trub etc drops to 75%
