Brewday 6-10-07 Flowers Original

Post by subsub » Sat Oct 06, 2007 12:28 pm

Thought I'd brew today as swmbo is at work and the kids are quite docile today. I've been looking to do this recipe for a while as I've heard great reviews about it and enjoyed the taste of the real thing.

23L

3.8kg Marris Otter
3.5gm Crystal

17g Target @11% 120min
10g Styrian Goldings @3.8% 120min
0.5kg Cane Sugar 120min
10g Styrian Goldings @3.8% 15min

Gervin No1

1gm Target @11% Dry Hop
5gm Styrian Goldings @3.8% Dry Hop

This is a Mark Olloson recipe that I've slightly butchered due to the AA of the Target hops. Unfortunately, wifey has taken the camera to work with her so they'll be no pix today. Mash is on :D

When Flowers owned the brewery and the rights, the stuff was beautiful. Unfortunately not so much when Whitbread took over.

Woops methinks this will be a bit stronger than I thought due to me adding the sugar at the start of the boil instead of 60mins ](*,). The expected OG was 1044ish but ended up at 1052. Never mind eh? :D

Presumably it doesn't matter when you add the sugar in the boil in terms of affecting the gravity :?

Anyway, it's no hardship having a beer over 5% ABV

FO is so full of flavour I think you'll barely notice the increased potency taste wise. I has an incedible amount of maltyness, on par with much higher OG brews :D

The hard bit is going to be waiting for it to be ready

When adjusted for temp it was actually 1054 :D My Gervin beers normally finish around 1007 so I could actually be looking at a 6%+ beer

Vossy1, no probs waiting for it as I've still got a corni full of Sounds Like? to get through plus and Edme kit that was given to me by a mate. I may have to change the name of the brewery though as I'm brewing Winter Royal on Friday  another one of my faves :D

Bitter_Dave, yes it matters, but only if you intended to do a weaker beer :D

Well, I came back from our hard fought victory at Coventry last night and thought I deserved a pint. The Flowers has come out just as I wanted it but a little bit stronger than the original (5.7%).
