Brew Day - 28/05/06

Post by bod » Sun May 28, 2006 10:41 am

right, its brew day!!!!

the waters heating up, grains are weighed, just need to pop down to asda and get some bleech while its mashing, as i've run out of sanitiser.

making a light ale for the mrs today, Sal doesnt do hoppy ales, so this ones a light session beer.

In the mash tun
3400g marris otter
250g wheat malt

In the boiler
20g northern brewer (9.5%) for 60 mins
5g irish moss for 15 mins
10g fuggles (5.1%) for 10 mins

expecting 1.036 OG (edited cos i copied it from an old recipe and it was wrong)

i'll also be brewing 20 litres of turbo cider. :D

stay tuned for photos as the day progress's.

I batch sparged yesterday. It was very easy. Calculated 1.050 (using formula on Jim's webpage), got 1.046...that's 92% efficiency!

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ May 28 2006, 12:30 PM)How do you maintain temperature in the mash tun bod ?
i cover it with a cut down sleeping bag and put a cushion on top, get less than one degree in temp loss that way.

i love batch sparging, never had any issues with it, and much prefer the simplicity of it!! :D

yeah, i have a ball valve on the pot with a piece of braid hose inside to filter it all, the same as my mash tun. think i have a photo of it somewhere. i did have a copper one untill recently but its been clogging up on me alot for some reason,
just about finished tidying up, got a few more photos to post as as well. went fairly smoothly, no major issues other than the mess i've created!

Nice shiny piece of kit :D

It would be a shame to have to drill a hole in it though for the tap
