Brew Day 03 June 2006
no, i'm actually off out to sell a couple of tickets to punters outside hampden park for tonights Bon Jovi concert!!!!
as a local resident, we get offered tickets for the events at hampden at cheaper prices, to keep us sweet so we dont complain about the noise and the hordes of people. so, having no interest in Bon Jovi, i might as well sell these tickets to who ever wants them.
should clear a good 200 quid for the pair..... i'm not a tout, just "unable to go anymore".

aye, the wife works funny hours at her shop, and works most week ends, so she's hardly ever up for going out these days unless i have a gig on or its something she wants to go to.... you know the script.
most of the folk already in the pub look like they just stepped out of the early nineties, but are still old enough to know better....

QUOTE (eskimobob @ Jun 3 2006, 06:14 PM) a days brewing has to be better than a day spent doing DIY like me today....
couldn't agree more. have spent the best part of this week creating a flower bed. sequence of events - swing pick to break up shellet, shovel to barrow, move barrow to dumping area, and repeat.
when hole in ground is complete proceed with sieving earth from shellet to barrow. move barrow to hole and fill. when al all earth has been retreived shovel in old horse shit until original level achieved. <_< give me a stuck sparge anytime

As expected a few pictures of the day
Big bertha patiently waiting her turn

Decision decisions which method should I use - oh b*gger it why not all 3

Running clear but what am I doing inside today?

Section of my copper manifold - any obvious reasons why its sticking. Should i make cuts deeper and wider?

Roll on the next brew - dirty brown pancake and lid puffed up on the royal oak FV. SG about 1052 at 22 litres even allowing for a top up of a couple of pints of cold water to get temp below 26c
Almost forgot to mention - dropped the boiler plug in the wort. They must be well sealed as it didnt complain when i plugged it in

Thanks JM and Daab :beer
I will add more and deeper slots but know I have the trusty old straining bag on standby should be ok.
Plenty of time to experiment as next brew wont be for a while now - I have some grain left over that I could use.
One thing I didnt mention was that although mash temp started at 67.4 finished at 63. I looked at the asda cooler at £7ish quid but the sides looked like blue painted cardboard  - can anyone recommend something more substantial

After a relaxing day at seaside came home to check on old popey and seems to be going along well with a most pleasant waft. My shananigins yesterday may not have ruined it after all ( certainly the Starting gravity was ok )

I used the danstar nottingham dried yeast this time ( HBS ordering some windsor for me for future ones ) and ferment it at whatever temp the garage is + a couple of hours blast with the belt overnight.
I usually just scrape the dark brown / grey bitter stuff off with my spoon and sometimes give it a good stir. I dont take the rest of the froth off.
Whats the general consensus on stirring and skimming ?

Safely barrelled tonight - after spending 45 mins trying to get the gert big syphon tube out of my tiny 2inch barrel opening
Seems to have survived the tropical temps while i have been away - the only thing I would say is that there was a slight banana whiff in the first 1/2 pt yeasty stuff run off...bit odd
Also going to rename eldridge pip as there were loads of the blighters floating on top - guess from hops.

No problems on taste , or clarity for that matter, as took a taster tonight and was very pleasantly surprised given its difficult birth
Just as well I did try it 3 days after barrelling as there was no fizz. The cap had been screwed on too tight resulting in the big blue O ring not seating properly allowing gas to escape. Now rectified and a blast from the gas cylinder for good measure. seems to have put it back on track - is it worth priming again
Amazed at how different it tastes to abbott. cant wait to make another brew when weather cools a bit.

Final post on this one from me - this Royal oak is fantastic and would highly recommend brewing it. Who would have thought after the fun & games of brewing it .
I have a horrible feeling though that I wont have much of it left after saturday when my guests leave after the england game
At least gives me an excuse to start the Palmers IPA brew
