problems fermenting anyone?

Post by mattfuzzy » Sun Nov 11, 2007 8:29 pm

hey everyone
just wondering if anyones had problems getting TC or lemon TC kicking off?

i made a lemon turbo thingy about 36 hours ago and used half a packet of cider yeast, now it looks like the yeast is floating around weather it be top of just floating around and its blown up and gone hazy.

temps fine so just wondering if my yeast was screwd or mabe the acidity of the lemon juice killed it?

not producing co2 either.

Matt is this the brew you posted the other day with the jiff lemon and lime juice ? if so thats your problem, both contain large amounts of preservative and metabisulphate, thus not giving your yeast much of a chance.
You could try boiling at a steady simmer for 20 mins to try and drive off the preservertive and pitch another yeast... but no guarentee it will work.

I kicked my Atomic Lemon off using a sachet of bread yeast (as I was aiming for an authentic student brew), from memory it took two sachets but I put it down to using a Campden tablet on the water.

Try making a starter and adding it to the demijohn, at least that way you know if the yeast is viable before it hits the mix.

Could be the acidity... :?

i didnt bother boiling it today... instead ended up putting quater packet of champagne yeast in last night and its bubbling today, slow, but bubbling....
also i had a tin of john bull chocolate stout lying around so i made a safale s04 starter (possibly on the big side for a starter but what the hell) and made that up which if the eruption of the starters anything to go by the stout should be exploding by now
heres to good times! and plenty of brewing :D
