Last night i had to tip away a batch of Brewferm Diablo (x2). I was about to bottle it, had a dabble and all i could taste was TCP. What a waste.
When i first made it up i did a batch of Coopers Stout at the same time. The stout is now maturing in a barrell and tastes bloody lovely. I was wondering what i did different to make the Diablo taste like TCP then i realised i used hot water out of the tap to get the dregs out of the tin. From what i can gather hot water contains more chemicals. A stupid, stupid mistake but thats how you learn.
Bad Batch
I don't understand that. If your hot water has spent some time in your hot water cylinder:
1) I suppose it might have minisculey higher copper compounds
2) It should have the same chloramines (if any) but less chlorine
3) Because of (2) it could be less sanitized
Isn't TCP taste down to chlorine? Is it really a TCP taste you've detected or something else? Are you sure you used a 1/2 campden tablet?
Anyway, maybe someone can shed some light...

I brew therefore I ... I .... forget
Yes, from the chemical angle, using hot water is no different to cold if you have an on-demand system. If you have a hot water cylinder it should have less chlorine. So that pretty much eliminates the can-rinsing as a cause of the TCP taste.Andy wrote:Not all hot water systems use a cylinder but heat/supply hot water on demand instead.

I did both brews at the same time and the Stout does not have the TCP taste. The water where i live has a very low chlorine content so there has never been the need to treat it with Campden tablets.
This is the first brew this has happend to me on and like i say the only thing i did different is the hot water thing. Very puzzling.
