What to do with a litre of vodka (ideas for liqueurs)

Post by Petrovitch » Sun Nov 18, 2007 7:18 pm

I think this is the right place for this...

So I have a litre of half decent vodka (Absolut, 40%) that was bought superdupercheap on the ferry and was wondering if anyone had any recipes for liqueurs or aperitifs to make with it. I've already made some sloe gin, and have a pound or two of sloes and blackcurrants sitting in the freezer if anyone has any ideas for them - I think I saw a recipe for cassis on here somewhere.

And before you say it no i'm not going to just bung it in the fridge and drink it neat, you can buy Russian Standard in the UK now so I ain't touching anything else

Well isn't the search function useful (smacks self in face), cassis:

'3 cups icing sugar' sounds very sweet to me tho...

Definately the way to go. I made some blackberry gin that tasted like cough medicine. I think by volume 1 pint of fruit, half of sugar top up to a litre of vodka would do well. Didn't manage to harvest any blackberries this time and really kicking myself now.

Fill a 1.5L Kilner Jar with pricked Scoth Bonnet Peppers, Add the vodka, seal Invert twice a day for 10 days, Pour off Vodka into a bottle. Make the meanest Bloody Marys ever.

Ih and if you drink it neat, it does need to be ice cold :D and put the loo roll in the freezer

Skittles vodka?

I do like the sound of Scotch Bonnet Vodka though... I'm growing some Dorset Nagas next year.

*whimper*

Think i'll pass on the bowel-disruptor pepper vodka, I had enough difficulty with a high octane pickled egg at the last Chelmsford beer festival (admittedly it was called something like '13 weeks of ring sting').

That cranberry vodka sounds good DaaB, might have a look see if I can get my hands on some cranberries.

Me neither, weren't many round here this year, and they were a bit watery, don't think they got enough sun to ripen.

my Mum did a (greek?) green-walnut-and-vodka based liquer last year. Unfotunately there haven't been any walnuts this year.

Wonderful it is. Sweet, but rich and warming. Perfect on a freezing day.

I will look out the recipe over my Christmas holidays.

Well whatever you decide on I hope you don't make it like the polish do. They have this stuff called Grasovka which is flavoured with an extract of bison grass blade. The bottle even comes with a blade of grass in it. It smells of freshly mown hay and tastes pretty much the same. There is even a website if you want to check it out. http://www.grasovka.com

Why am I getting visions of curious brew stuffing lawn clippings into a bottle of vodka all of a sudden...

I love Zubrowka! I always used to have a bottle of Bison Grass in the freezer ready for shots but I've sort of got out of the habit since marriage and kids came my way.
