Simpsons of Baldock March Beers

Post by Seveneer » Mon Dec 03, 2007 8:55 pm

I had a call from SteveD this morning claiming to have obtained a day pass from his better half and asking if I was brewing as planned. So, what to brew?

Steve has a particular interest in parti-gyled beers and we both enjoy the Durden Park recipes so we thought we'd have a go at the Simpsons of Baldock March Beers. That's a barley wine of OG 100 and then a 2nd beer of OG 61 8)

My 100l mash tun isn't big enough to do 10 gallons of each so we went with 5 gallons per beer.

The recipe per gallon is here. For two 5 gallon gyles we used 18 kg of grain in the mash tun  .

The schoolboy error for the day was that I didn't factor in the 5 litre ullage in the boilers and ended up with 20 litres per gyle rather than 25

The HERMS performed perfectly producing a crystal clear wort. :)

The first runnings were collected in the boiler and brought to the boil while the 2nd runnings were collected in two fermenters then boiled in the emptied HLT.

The resulting worts tasted fabulous so lets hope the yeasties do their thing now and give a good attenuation :D

Sounds like a good day was had.

I'm thinking about doing the Ushers Stout (93 IIRC) then a go at the Adnam's Tally Ho, and probably one of the BIG IPA's although mine is eminently drinkable :D

And Like you I will be going with 5 Gallon Batches, and probably Partigyling for a table beer. . . . Of course having a double 50L boiler makes partigyling particularly easy . . . Just need to remember which boiler to put the hop additions in :)

I tasted the Ushers Stout the week before last and it was pretty good. On the same evening I also tasted a stout made to a gravity of 100 where the recipe was basically the Ushers recipe doubled up for the same quantity of liquor. Now that was just amazing 8)
