I was in my local asian supermarket a couple of days ago and I noticed 500g tubs of 'Maltose' for around 80p. I couldn't read all the labelling but the product is derived from rice rather than barley. A bit of googling and this is the nearest description i could find on the web http://www.syrup-china.com/Pure%20Maltose%20Syrup.htm
This would be the stuff your BBQ pork (Char Shiu) gets made with.
I was wondering if anyone has used this stuff for beer making? I doubt it will be a spraymalt replacement but it might be better than a bag of granulated sugar. So any thoughts? I notice the web site also has a product called 'Maltose Syrup for Beer' derived from corn. From reading all the guff on the pages I would deduce that these products are about as far from organic as you can get.

As an experiment I have started a batch of beer using the rice maltose I got from my local asian supermarket.
Geordie Lager beer kit
2 kg rice maltose
Made up to 5 gallons.
I used 2 packets of the kit supplied yeast (QVB it was stamped on the packet - if that indicates the type of yeast )
OG 1051
I boiled the maltose for 10 minutes just in case, it smelt very similar to the usual LME. One observation was that it was very pale, straw coloured when added to the liquer in the FV. Another is that it is very stiff, even after standing in hot water, much stiffer than LME, so quite hard to get out of is containers and into the saucepan.
The rice maltose cost me 80p per 500g jar. This makes it very similar in price, weight for weight, to brewing sugar from my LHBS.
Now just got to wait and see how it comes out.
