New Year's TC
New Year's TC
I've gotta have a go at this TC stuff. So earlier today i got 6 ltr Pam's Homestyle apple juice. 99.9% pressed apple juice it claims. No added rubbish. I have a new 15 ltr container for water so i plan on using that as FV. I'll use plain old bread yeast and if i like the results i'll pep it up a bit on the volume side.
I could knock it up tonight but i'm not sure i'll stay awake through the sterilising stage. So i think i'l leave it till the morrow...

Still no idea about posting a pic but the TC has kicked of.
It felt a little cool so i took it outside for a sunbath for half hour. It loved it and started fizzing away like a good un.
One Q. I have only 6ltr in a 20ltr container. Will this be an issue with too much airspace? I can always pop into town tomorrow and get more AJ.

Got another 12 ltr
Also picked up a sachet of champagne yeast. I'm going to boil up 3 ltr to reduce, cool it down with 6-8ltr AJ give it a bloody good stir to aerate well and then pitch the champagne yeast. Leave it to calm down for a day or two then add remaining AJ.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Amateur Night at the proms...
I boiled up 3 ltr AJ in a big pot for about 1 1/2 hrs. During this time i sterilised my new 15ltr FV. I'd previously drilled a hole for the tap and one in lid for airlock grommet. I was filling dive cylinders at the time so the timings are rough. Lives don't depend on TC, if you get what i mean.
Cylinders all filled and concentrated AJ cooling down i added a sachet of champagne yeast to 100ml 25C cooled down boiled water from kettle. Gave it a good stir, draped a teacloth over the top and set to my main task.
I poured the concentrate AJ(reduced by about half i'd say) into my FV followed by 9 ltr AJ. Snapped the lid on and gave the FV a dam good shake for a good ten mins in all. Had a few rests in between shaking like, not that heroic at my old age.
Measured temp-32C. So added a good glass full of ice cubes from the freezer. Gave the bugger thing a good shake again, till funny shapes occured and i had to stop. Almost opened a bottle of IPA but resisted well and carried on.
Measured again and temp was 28, so i left FV for ten mins or so. I chatted to Fishwife so could have been 40. Measured again and 26 so i pitched hydrated yeast. Gave FV a bloody good shake again, fitted airlock, half filled with cooled boiled water and then it's now, sort of thing.
Here's the boil

Here's the cooling down bit in my sink of ice water.

And lastly after cooling down, just before adding yeast.

It'd better hurry up and ferment then. If there was a time i needed Alien abduction it certainly is now.
