clicky there is nothing on the website about hop plants you just need to send an email to them asking about hop plants. They won't be ready till about march so no big rush.

I got some last year, very reasonably priced but you are since these are cuttings and not rhizhomes you are very unlikely to get the vigorous growth associated with the rhizhomes.
It might be a two or three years before you see a crop worth talking about.

While the rhizhomes are more expensive you'll get a crop quicker (some on here even got some in the first growing season).

Good luck with the hop growing :D

Look through the Hop growing for 2007 thread to see how things went last year. I bought three rhizomes from essentially hops and had great success - about a 500g each of Fuggles and Goldings. I think if you want a crop in 2008 you'll have to go the rhizome route.

Cheers,
ML.

all 4 are doing well and i hop to get a propper harvest next year.

In the first year only allow one or two shoots to grow. This way most of the plants' energy will go towards establishing a good root system.
I'm just here for the beer.

Is it possible to grow hops in a planter/container? If so how big a container would be needed?

Don't have much in the way of cultivatable space in the garden, but would quite like to have a few hop plants on the go for future brewing.....

Rob,

I hesitate to say this but I do think that you would be pushing it to grow hops that far north. I suspect they would grow but to reach harvest ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Hops will grow in scotland there are a few members of the SCB who successfully grow hops. I think most of then pick fuggles as they can tolerate the wet climate better. I got a piece of fuggle root & planted it last year but it never came to much. But i planted it rather late & it kept getting dug up by all the neighbourhood cats plus we never had a summer in scotland last year. There is a commercial company in scotland growing & selling hops Clyde Valley Hops in Lanarkshire

I've got a Fuggles & Challenger on the go. The Challenger did much better in the adverse weather, much stronger growth, however the Fuggles yielded more hops. Hopefully I'll get a harvest next year.

Yeah, that didn't help.

well I went down to Essentially Hops today and picked up a fuggles and an EKG rhisome they are now planted in the garden so hopefully should have some hops this autumn. going to grow one up and along a 6' so 30' for growth should be enough and the other one up the hill.

They had plenty of each variety left
