how sticky is Gervis english ale yeast?

Post by MacDuck » Wed Jan 09, 2008 11:47 pm

Hello All

When buying the ingredients for my first extract the seller said Gervis English Ale yeast is good for bottling as it sticks to the bottom of the bottle.

I ended up using another yeast for fear of cleaning bottles afterwards being extra difficult.

Can anyone give any advice on this?

You "want" a sticky yeast for bottling, so that it is not so easy to disturb the sediment when pouring.

That is why some commercial brewers used to use one yeast for fermentation and another one for bottling.

It's not so sticky that you can't shift it (unless you leave your dirty bottles hanging around for months before washing).

these are the only two yeasts i use for brewing in barrels and i think the safale is probably stickier imho :D
