Never the twain shall meet then...

Even extract recipes tend to have some grains... Mind you I guess if you're gonna mash, why bother with extract...

I once went on a tour of a small Welsh brewery that brewed cheap beer for the local mining and working men's clubs that brewed only from extract... Now there's a thing!

I've seen a few recipes that use malt extract with a small amount of grain (often crystal malt, which is already converted during the malting process).

Grains that provide mainly flavour, rather than starch, are good for this too, e.g. roast barley and other dark malts.

Interesting! I've never tried it. I just went straight from kits to a full mash. Didn't see the point in piddling about with half measures! :P

QUOTE (grainger @ Apr 25 2005, 11:18 AM) hi

i always used malt extract, if you buy it from the whole food shop you can get it dead cheap, though there was some legal warning on it that it wasnt to be used for homebrewing as it was untaxed .. it made excellent brew, about a pound to a gallon.

boil up the hops (or other herbs) in a muslin bag in however much hot water you like - tip it on the malt extract in your bucket - add sugar and yeast and put it in the airing cupboard.

great forum

Hi Grainger

Good to see another extract brewer on the board...
