TC v KIT Cider

Post by Martin the fish » Mon Jan 21, 2008 1:01 pm

For me there is no comparison.

My TC is just, basically, something to drink with alcohol in.

Whereas my cider kits are fantastic, a joy to drink.

To make a 25ltr batch of TC costs me-here in NZ approx $45. To make a 25ltr kit costs, $18.50 for kit, $3 for 1kg sugar, $5 for Gervin Champagne yeast. So $26.50. It's far far better in all aspects and cheaper.

I was happy to give TC a go and it was fun. But i have found mine expensive and bad tasting. In comparison to cheaper cider kits.

Just my thoughts. :)

Ive not made a 25 litre batch, but you are right.
To make that quantity.a proper kit is cheaper by quite a bit.I have just priced it up in £uk and I was quite surprised.
Thing is for a newbie like me,you can make a small batch cheaply with no proper kit.So in that respect its a good "entry" into home brewing.
I had 100% better results with my first tc than I did 20 years ago with a lager kit,but this has given me the confidence to give it another go.
Just got to get the kit now :D

TC is great to play with while you wait for 'real' brews to finish :)
That said, I'd recommend hybrid over just kit cider, its a little bit bland otherwise.

Out of the 3 types of cider i've done. Everyone has asked for more of the bog standard kit cider. Some people say that TC is weak and horrible. Everyone agreed my super cider was v strong but too strong. 2 bottles and you don't want anymore
So last night i made up my last cider kit. I'll probably do another few through the summer as it's stupidly easy.
I will have a go at a hybrid cider but at around $75 for 23 ltr's it ain't cheap. :(
I will do another batch of Super Cider as i love it. It's flat, slightly cloudy and 6%ish. Bootiful. :D

Ouch

My hybrid cider was a £9 cider kit and 10l of apple juice at 59p a litre for a total cost of £14.90

I've decided on a hybrid kit next.

Going to go for a cheap cider kit (dependant on my LHBS stock on FridaY) with additional apple juice.

THC = Turbo Hybrid Cider

:D 8)

i did TC a few times but since i pretty much grew up on scrumpy from the vast fields and farms of somerset (or something like that) im used to the very full flavour of apple in my tc and not some cheap thin as p*ss water strongbow mix-a-like, it was good for playing around when you're at the stage of brewing you just wanna brew brew brew, i got a job instead though

Ooooo THC lol
