Tonights tinkering....

Post by Andy » Wed Sep 13, 2006 7:41 pm

Just tested my new three tier setup using water - now features a pump to transfer wort after the mash from a collecting bucket up into the boiler.

Setup:

Copper cane to ensure wort gets pumped to bottom of boiler:

Works really well, the pump gives a nice flow rate and no air bubbles. This is my attempt to see if hot side aeration is an issue for me as previously I've had to tip the contents of the collecting bucket into the boiler. Do this for three collections and the wort is pretty aerated!

Saturday will see the thing in real use!

I think the copper cane will be fine, even if some nasties do congregate then their next stop will be a boiler for 90 mins 8)

It's a Totton NDP 35-3 magnetically coupled pump.

I've got two also - £15 each posted from Ebay, one came with a spare pump chamber also 8)

Just used one to pump the wort after mash into the boiler as per the layout in pictures above - superb! No aeration and no lifting large quantities of hot wort!

Is that pump okay with hot liquids andy? It mentions chilled liquids, but not hot.

It has a max temp rating of 85 degC so fine for any stage of the homebrew process.

Andy, Interesting looking pump and a good price too!
How did you modify it for connecting to the hoses?
I guess it's probably fine but it doesn't seem to say that it is foodsafe on the datasheet :-k

EB - I connect the hoses to the pump via plastic barbed washing machine connectors. The pump is fine for food safe applications.

Sorry, still don't get it
The datasheet for the pump seems to show black barbed fittings but your photo shows some white fittings. Do these push on to the pump and then you push the tubing on to the white fittings?

I've got the pump model with 1/2" BSP threaded fittings - the datasheet lists the different types available.
