Fitting a bottling tapto a fermenting barrel

Folks, How far up from the base to drill the hole? I'm thinking 2" (to the base of the hole).

Thanks.

I made up a bottling bucket from a fermenter by driling a hole with the bottom edge 6mm (1/4") from the bottom of a youngs fermentation bucket. I siphon the cleared beer from its fermenter to the bottling bucket and add priming sugar and sometimes yeast if left too long in secondary. Bottling is then easy but I know there is the increased risk of oxidation / infection but still lucky.

I just put it high enough to clear the bottom so it doesn't hit when you place on the floor.

Ditto.

1" spade bit and just whacked the hole in as close as I could get the tap without fouling on the floor.

Ditto... this was the advice my HBS gave me... and funilly enough if all goes according to plan, exactly what I'll be doing this evening.
