And brought a couple of kits.

Brupaks Colne valley bitter - going to follow DAAB's method with this one.

Muntons Premium bitter (1.5kg 40 pint kit) and some medium spraymalt. - looking to do something a little more experimental with this one.
I get the impression that the single tin kits are inferior to the 2 can kits, however if I were to make up less than the 40 pints, say 30 and reduce the amount of added sugar (Spraymalt), will I get a better tasting beer or just a stronger one? I am looking to improve taste rather than strength.

Other suggestions always appreciated.

If I were to make 20 pints by simply adding the yeast and no extra sugar would this not be the same as making up half of a 2 can kit?

no, i wouldnt think so, as all you are doing is concetrating the beer, so the starting gravity will be through the roof! :D but its not the same as using half a two can kit. kits are developed to be added to a certain amount of water to dilute them, so only adding half the water will result in a much stronger beer. i'd just add the spray malt and do it that way, it'll still be a decent beer. muntons kits are generally quite good from what i remember.

Try steeping 300 grams or so of light crystal malt in 60 degree C water for half an hour and add this (the liquid, not the grains). Then maybe boil a little bit of Goldings hops (20 grams or so) for 15 minutes to add a little more hop flavour. If you're looking to experiment these are the two best things to try.
