Just been to the brew shop where i got this kit and the owner said he had made the kit before by just adding the hop pellets as we did and it came out nice and it was a decent kit. He said he knows the person that deals with the York Brewery kits and is going to speak to them to see if they have changed the hops recently or anything.

Well I decided to give this kit another try. This time I steeped the hops and strained the remainder out. After fermentation I left the brew to condition in a keg for 7 weeks.

When I tried it it had the same wierd taste to it but a lot milder. The taste was not as strong as before and allthough it wasnt a very nice brew I decided I could cope with it. I have now drank about 10 pints of it and its started tasting ok. The earthy taste has pretty much dissapered and id go as far as saying its a nice brew.

So what do you reckon, the bad hop taste had gone to the top of the barrrel (the barrel is a top tap) and then been drawn off leaving good beer underneath. I wouldnt have thought that it has been the extra time that has mellowed out the flavour as it was left for 7 weeks before I started drinking it.

Hi all

I visited The York Brewery Sunday last weekend after my Stag do and got chatting with the chaps in there. They were very helpful :D The hops in that brew are Goldings and Fuggles. I would next time I do this kit, ditch hops supplied, boil bought hops in some of the wort for 20 mins. 5g of Goldings and 15g of Fuggles.

I would dry hop 10g of fuggles aswell in primary and secondary and then transfer the brew less the hops into Corny after secondary and see how it compares.

The chaps at the brewery said if brewers have any problems/questions then give them a call.

The people who put their kits together from Hamstead Brew Centre are miserable Ba$7Ards and are very unhelpful unlike the brewery. I did mention this to the chaps aswell.

The brews this brewery make are superb. Stonewall is a superb pint so I bought a kit!

Regards

Graham :)
