Lager coloured ale?
Now you've got me flummuxed.
When I lived in the area I used to visit the Wyndam Arms(?) on a fairly frequent basis and as far as I am aware the hop back brewery was well established before my time (my time was 1989 to 1992-3 ish), but it was during my time there that Summer Lightning was conceived. I am sure I remember drinking "Summer Light", but I may be kidding myself.
Certainly, John Gilbert was brewing before Summer Lightning hit an unsuspecting public. No fledgling brewer is going to produce something so radical at the time as his first brew. Everybody in the brewing industry was gobsmacked at its instant success; probably including J.G. himself.
I do not wish to demean S.L., it's a classic, but basically it is Harp without the fizz.
(Harp was single-infusion top fermented)

He only ever uses plain old pale malt (Halcyon I think) and it looked exceedingly pale coloured.

I just went in to the visitor centre and asked for some, could'nt have been more helpful. I've collected strongarm yeast before while on a brewery trip.spackum wrote:bigun wrote:Yep, I was with J_P and can confirm the lager was made from "Halcyon", the yeast was genuine kroninburb yeast aquired from Camerons who are brewing it on contract.J_P wrote:Last Thursday I had a pint of utterly amazing home-brewed lager made by a really clever chap that has been grain brewing since Reg Maudling legally allowed it.
