Hope you enjoy it E.B, I know that I can't make these fast enough for Mrs H! :wall

Looks like your brewday was a sucess, great pics as well. I will probably be brewing this myself next weekend hopefully.

I have added more grains to the original recipe myself on account of the low effiency syndrome which struck me the last time I brewed this myself, I re-calculated to an effiency of 72% rather than 79%.

Hydrometer reading today is 1.033, corrected for temperature, so a drop of 6 points on the week. Temperature is about 9C today, and it will have been around this throughout the week (bit cooler at night obviously).

There is some noticeable fermentation activity through the air lock, and this was also visible in the trial jar.

It looks, smells and tastes very promising (still a bit sweet at the moment, obviously).

I was anticipating a slow fermentation given the cool conditions in the garage, so I think I am OK and just need to be patient :D

Anyone any thoughts?

Mrs H's lagers usually take around 6-7 days to ferment at around 12c-14c using Saflager yeast.

It does seem a very slow fermentation, perhaps the brew is too cool at nightime?

I have placed it in the garage for the fermentation (with my old cars - another weekend activity Laughing ) to keep it reasonably cool as I do not have any temperature control equipment.

Hey ER, I too have a garage full of old cars, bits of old cars and just bits.

No room for my beer though...I do that in the laundry room

But that might change

What old cars have you got?

Thanks for your comments, chaps!

HH, I think you're right, it is because of the cold nights this week. Do you think this will harm the brew, or just mean it takes a while longer? It is definitely fermenting.

Oggy' Bar, I barely have room in the garage. Sounds pretty similar to you - cars, bits of cars and bits

Cars are:

1946 Morris Eight Series E - this one is on the road, although it didn't get out much last year as there was so little decent weather :(

1936 Austin 10 Cambridge - not on the road. Engine and gearbox need reconditioning, amongst other bits and pieces. It's basically a sound car, but has clearly suffered from the attentions of people who haven't known what they're doing in the past. Ideally I will find a reasonable replacement engine and gearbox to slot in for a while until I get round to getting the originals sorted out but, as you can imagine, such things are not really in plentiful supply.

All good fun though

DaaB, thanks for your comment, too, I will go in and give it a stir (if it's not too chilly in there now  )

ER. 1960 Jaguar Mk2..rebuilt it from scrap in 1990. this one' running though I don't use it as much as I should 2000 miles in last 5 years (pitiful)

Triumph mayflower 1953. rebuilt it in 1981 and ran it for years. Needs an engine rebuild.

Triumph Renown 1948. Purchased it in 1985...Stripped it to last nut & bolt. Moved house twice...still stripped to last nut & bolt...When I was 40 joked it would be a retirement project...now it will be

1953 Riley RM (only 11/2 I'm afraid still in one piece but needs total rebuild. Had it 20 years.

Lambretta SX150 ...reliving my youth..virtually running..but 5hit scared to try it out

Probably be in trouble for hijacking this thread

Impressive fleet there, OB. I'm determined to get out more in mine this year. "Drive it Day" is April 20 - I've missed the last couple of years for various reasons but will definitely get the car out for that this year 8)

If it is only dropping by 6 points per week I would be thinking about moving it to somewhere warmer or try insulating the brew at nightime, ie with a thick blanket or 2, or a sleeping bag.

Thanks, HH, I'll get the spare duvet around it. Although the cat is going to be distraught :=P

This is now down to 1.021, so a bit quicker, and fermentation still underway. It must be a combination of the duvet I wrapped around the bucket, the good stir I gave it, and the fact that the weather has warmed up considerably these last few days. Still looking and tasting very promising, so hopefully at quarter gravity later in the week 8)

From one extreme to the other...

It has now fermemted out to 1.003

It tastes good and has cleared quite reasonably in the FV, so I've put it into the barrel with priming sugar and finings.

I will try to forget about it for a few weeks and then see how it turns out. This one's got a bit stressful, I have to say
