Well, I'm gutted :(

Linthwaite Lite in the primary for 10 days, tasted at end....very nice.
Transfered to secondary with finnings on tuesday.
Looking to possibly transfer to cornie tonight, took a small sample to check for clarity and low and behold the same awful phenolic taste had appeared in the beer much like my turbo cider :out .

I had the primary on the tiled kitched floor and during the hot weather I would jam a ice block between the primary and the wall which kept it nice and cool.
The only problem was that nearing the end of the 10 days the dog had discovered a lovely cool ice block which she could chew on, to keep cool :o
Hence no cool blocks for the secondary phase.

Now I'm reduced in options. I won't get rid of the dog :P
I can't risk the dog by using a water bath <_<
I can't put the primary/secondary in the bath...the wife will kill me :lol:
I'm not around enough to use wet towels.
I don't have a basement

And above all I live in sunny Manchester :lol: :lol: :P

What can I do ?

Giving up brewing is not an option :bonk

Ps, everything was sanitised
I purged the secondary with co2 before racking
The tube was right at the bottom of the secondary on transfer

The only thing I noticed were small bubbles in the drain tube but I put this down to co2 in the beer, the tube/tap joint was not leaking.

I'm thinking a temperature controlled cupboard/fridge.....???

Hi DaaB, I'm thinking the fridge may be an option.

I already have a single deep freezer in the back bedroom for my fishing bait so I'll have to be nice to the wife for a while :lol:

It would only be needed in the hottest Mancunian summer months anyway :lol:

For the rest of the year I could use it to store my cornie's.

I think I went wrong by putting the secondary on the kitchen table. The logic behind this was that I wouldn't have to disturb the brew prior to the cornie!!
The floor is cold, the table isn't :(

I haven't even asked....does this sound like excess heat damage???
I'm thinking yeast decomposition by products

I'm going post hunting now for fridges and thermostats

ps, you stop brewing in early summer and start again in autumn......how do you store all that beer to keep you going :o

Sorry to here about your beer!
I'm lucky in I have room for a cold water tank and have furiously be shovelling ice packs in day and night trying to keep it cool.
I think the best I have done is stopped the temp going over 23 - 24 deg which is hotter than I would have liked but seeing as the utility room has often got hotter than 30! Recently I'm happy I’ve done all I can.
I'm leaving the corny in there now for at least 2 weeks before I have a proper taste, I hope its OK!

I have stopped brewing his summer mainly due to the continuous heat but also due to waiting on some promised kit but not yet receivng it (this kit will be used to move me to AG brewing).

I can probably store around 15-20 Gallons at a time although in general I have about 10 -15 Gallons (got a lot of my bottles waiting in the loft which I will eventually be using to store small samples of my beer for long term storage).

My main problem is storing the beer during the summer. Everywhere is too hot and I don't have the facilities for a fridge to keep that much beer in :( So, I have to leave most of my bottles in the shed and the keg in the kitchen. Fortunately I can fit a few bottles in the fridge which is great for drinking nice and cold (detrimental to the flavour unfortuantely).

Hi PoP, You might want to do a bit of temperature monitoring in your loft. Summer is a no go in my loft, 40 deg c most of the time. Nice and cold in winter though ;)

Hmmm, going to look into making one of these chillers this weekend.

Found the schwartz link but not JA's. Will draw my plans together when I come home from work later.

I wonder if you could replace the fan with a hairdryer for winter use, maybe even in the garage using 12v

Sorry to hear about your brew Vossy, I personally do not brew from late June to mid September, however that does not mean that I am without homebrew, I bottle some of my brews from December onwards, I have a small fridge especially for my bottles, it has been working overtime recently!

On a bright note, I realise that this has been one of our best summers for many year's but remember that this is Britain and probably won't last much longer despite what the weather forecast keeps on telling us!

Wont break the bank at £4.99 from Maplin.

I'm thinking of extending the sensor and mounting the circuit board on the outside of the chiller ;)

Good on you vossy - should have thought of doing that.

My chiller is almost finished and I used the maplins thermostat - good choice.

Shop around for the polysterene - found a local manufacturer who provided all I needed (50mm thickness) cut to size for £15 which Isnt too bad
