Brew from a trip to the lakes.

Post by carpet » Tue Feb 26, 2008 12:46 pm

I've just come back form a very nice trip to Kendal and the Lake District (despite the weather trying to spoil it!), during which I had a tour round the Hawkshead brewery (very exciting for a newbie like me!). I took some photos which I'll stick up once I've got them developed (if they turn out OK - I forgot to use the flash).

Anyway, while I was also there I had an amazing bottled beer from the Dent brewery (also in the Lakes) called Ramsbottom, for me it was one of the nicest bottled brews I've ever had.

Anyone else tried it/aware of any clone recipes?

Hi there's a recipe on Norm's Almanac:

I'm not experienced enough to tell how accurate it is though :?

I'm a big fan of bottled Ramsbottom - rich and malty, and quite true to the draught stuff.

I like the Hawkshead Red from the brewery you visited - have only had bottled but very nice.

I'm gonna be trying the Hesket Newmarket Blencathra Bitter recipe one the ingredients arrive - another fine Lakeland Ale :D

Thanks for that link.

I had a pint of the Hawkshead Gold, and a bottle of the Red. I preferred the Gold to the Red but it could just be draught vs bottled.

I am a great fan of both Dentdale and Dent Brewery, I think their Kamikaze and T'Owd Tup are their best. I dropped in at the brewery a few years back and was shown round, it's a very small brewery in a converted barn. If you happen to be in Dentdale then visit the Sun Inn, a smashing pub which has a couple or so Dent Brewery ales on tap at any one time. I visit Dentdale every year or two to go walking, the tops aren't crowded like in the Lakes.

I brought home a bottle of T'Owd Tup too and had that last night with a bottle of Ramsbottom.

The T'Owd Tup was full of flavours and really nice but I love the Ramsbottom - I could drink it all night long.
