Green Bullet in the Head IPA

Post by TC2642 » Fri Feb 29, 2008 7:35 pm

I quite liked oblivious's idea of musically themed beers, so this one got it's inspiration from a Rage Against the Machine track.

In planning for summer I have decided I would like to use the Green Bullet that I recently bought, in a high gravity IPA,

I'm not sure whether to go for a American type hopping schedule having several additions throughout the boil (which I have used to great success in a APA type beer) or the more traditional one large amount at the start of the boil. I usually mash around 67oC for 90mins and boil for 90 mins, so the base for 23ltrs would be:

7kg Pale malt
100gms Green Bullet 11.7% A.A.

I also have a selection of other hops including Saaz, Worcester and E.K Goldings, Cascade, Hallertau and some other varieties that I could late addition with.

I have a WLP002 in terms of liquid yeast but also some S-05, S-04 and Gervin Ale yeast.

Any suggestions?

S-05 all the way for an APA or IPA.

I used some green bullet as the bittering hop in my CAP, tasters from the fermenter have a nice agreeable bitterness.

The way hop prices are going at the moment i wouldn't bother with an out and out american hopping schedule which seem to be very heavy on the hops. I'd keep my green bullets for bittering in other brews.

Hi Del,

I really don't mind using this amount of hops, I have set my heart on a big hoppy beer anyway, and I do have quite a large supply of hops at the mo and I really want to set aside a beer for the summer. I am really needing help on whether to go for late additions and what sort of aroma hop would compliment Green Bullet.

It'd be hard to look past cascade as the flavour and aroma hops with some goldings thrown in for that extra floral touch.

Cheers Del, that sounds good, I think I will go for a US type IPA then!
