Reducing boiling time for small batches

Post by sills » Mon Mar 03, 2008 1:58 pm

If you are making a small batch of about 10 lts would you reduce the boiling time. I made a small lager batch last year and by the time it had finished a 90min boil there was little wort left so I topped it up in the fv with boiled water and it was as week as something very week, or maybe it was just the style. It was a tiger clone.
Thanks

i know what you mean i did a mini mash on the stove and boiled 50% away in less than 30mins. Personally i would be tempted to cut the boil down to a little as posible for a small batch bearing in mind hop utilization and all other benifits of boiling will probably be reduced. it should be stirile in 15mins. this is a good example of how certain processes work better on a larger scale.

maybe I could give it a boil for a short period then turn the stat down a simmer for a hour.

I use a burco boiler so when I give I try this batch again I'll turn the stat down a notch and see how it goes. Got to do a 6x clone first though. Hopefully on Sunday :D
