Steeping Hops

Post by Wez » Fri Mar 07, 2008 12:13 am

Probably a bit late for tonights brew...

I add steep hops when the wort has been chilled to 80 degrees using an IC, it then takes ~30 mins to cool to the point where I transfer it to the FV - my question is, is 30 mins long enough or shoul I steep for longer?

Wez,
this is just my personal preference and I haven't any techno-data to back it up, but I like to steep for 60 mins after putting the hops in at 80c. Then turn the cold tap back on. Been doing this with Styrians and Amarillo and am pleased with the results.

Nice one SC, i'll try that (too late for this one now - it had 30 mins) :)

I tend to do the same as Stonechat, not for any particular reason other than it's all my immersion chiller can manage with my brewlength. I don't see there being any benefit in steeping for longer though, although obviously i can't back that up.

I was recently advised to lob in the hops and leave it for 30-40 mins to settle and form a filter bed before running off (slowly). I did this with the brew I did last night and it smells amazing bubbling away behind me, I think this one is going to be a hop monster

The hops that I throw in to steep settle out while the IC goes to work that takes around 30-40 mins, they do form a great filter bed and always trap loads of trub 8)
