B_D's brewday 08_03_08

Post by bitter_dave » Sat Mar 08, 2008 7:12 am

First brew of the year due to work, first brew I've documented in a long while

Going to be a simple bitter; grain will be:

Pale 4.2 kg (95%)
Crystal 0.22 (5%)

OG something like 1040 on my medicore efficiency.
23 litres.

Will work out hops I'll use in a bit.

Hopefully I'll grab a couple of photos.

Boiling the mash liqour

Yeah, I've been trying to finish my phd, so haven't brewed for quite a while... and it shows  Not quite sure what temp I mashed in at due to rubbish new thermoter (to replace the swanky electronic one I broke), which I can hardly read  Is it 64? is it 70? who knows

You should call it The Lottery Beer

I could name my brewery the lottery brewery, as my beers, although generally nice, never taste exactly as I intend  Motto: 'It could be [a] brew'

Mash ends in ten mins - I'll let you know what random temp it ends up at

Then to sort through the hops in my freezer to work out how I'm going to hop it.

Hi BD

Hope you have a good one today. Think I will join you today - a Marc Olloson 6X maybe :-k as my ale stocks are running low

Ps Was over in Amsterdam recently with a group of drunkerds and met this top english bloke who had moved over there. His favourite ale - Harveys Sussex bitter. Am I the only one not to have tasted the original....

That was me!*

I'd quite like to some of marc's recipes, if only I hadn't mislaid the book months ago  The lottery brewery is a bit shambolic

Good luck with the brew 8)

*Disclaimer - no it wasn't

Mash was 62 at the top and 67/68 at the bottom :? It might be a tad dry this one; may prime with treacle or something to restore some body if needed (would this make a difference?). Using S 04, so at least that isn't too attenuative.

Piccies to follow. Need to work out me hops now.

Looks good BD. I think treacle would tend to lighten the body because it's a simple sugar (or would it?). What's your PhD on?

Are you doing the write up, thats the worst part of it, 5-6 months of staring at a computer screen.

I was thinking treacle might be less fermentable than normal sugar, but I could well be wrong about.

PhD is on people working past retirement age (sociology).

I've got to finish by 14 April, and really should not be spending my Saturday making beer

I can honestly say doing a phd is a royal pain in the ass, and has driven me to the brink of insanity
