Red Ale

Post by Old Bloater » Sat Mar 15, 2008 10:20 am

Hi
I recently had a fantastic and interesting pint of "Royston Red"

Does anyone know how to get that glorious red tinge to the ale?
I have found several recipes which mention small amounts of crystal malt and pale malt but that is all I usually use anyway. It seems to also be an Irish speciallity but I can't find any recipes.
Any comments gratefully received.

Cheers
OB

IIRC Royston Red is a Buntingford Brewery beer. Try emailing them and asking what gives the red colour. I've spoken to them before and they've been very amenable.

To answer your question though, it could be a number of things. Some of the darker roasted barley's give a red color but you need to be careful of amounts as too much and you end up with a black beer.

Uumm, Royston Red! The website says they use a cocktail of hops, i'd be fairly sure that Centennial is one of them from my own attempts at this style.
Drinking: Double IPA (Mr President Clone)
Drinking: London Porter (5%)
Drinking: Belgian Dubbel (8%)
Conditioning: West Coast Red (5.6%)
Conditioning: Nelson & Friends Series No.1 (Mosaic)
FV: A few spiders
Planning: Everything else!
