turbo cider worry

Post by eeyores61 » Tue Mar 18, 2008 11:59 pm

Inspired by all this talk of turbo cider, I started one off in a tesco water bottle with bread yeast (we don't have a nearby brew shop). It wasn't very turbo and is still cloudy and fermenting (very slowly) after 10 days, will give it a bit longer to see if it will clear.

The worry is that a friend told me that 'dodgy cider' can make you blind  - why has scrumpy got that reputation?

Put me off a tad :(

I think that's more like dodgy homemade spirit maks you blind.

I can live with that!

(possibly lying down) :D

Seems to have got stuck at 1020 ish (first time I've used a hydro thingy), still very cloudy, no sign of bubbles or clearing, so I've put it in the sun to warm up a bit. If nothing happens today i'll probably try drinking it, yeast and all. Is this idea good/stupid/insane?

All advice appreciated :)

My brother-in-law's workmate was told by his quack that he was seriously damaging his body with the home-made scrumpy he was drinking. Terms quoted were "stop or die".

Any truth in this? Difference between home-made scrumpy and TC? Personally I feel it's more likely to be quantity than anything else (what's harmful about apple juice, sugar and yeast)?

Just getting into TC - don't wish to get scared out of it!

As with everything in life - all things in moderation. If You bro in laws mate was told stop or die, it sounds to me like he has a drink problem

Scrumpy or TC or just a nice lagar in the summer can all lead to bad things, but then so can eating too many bigmacs or whatever.

With that in mind my "pint-a-night" habit shall continue (something has to kill me and I'd rather it wasn't old age)!

Wow sounds like proper prison brew. It could well taste awful but dont let it put you off. If cider's your thing get some good dried wine or ale yeast of t'internet, make sure your bottle and everything you use is sterilised and ferment it in a dark, warmish place as per the yeasts instructions.

pint a night sounds ideal... but with beer in the keg and the fun of pouring and supping its hard not to repeat.

has the brother in laws workmate got gastric troubles? cider tends to be acidic and can exacebate conditions in the tummy and intestines?

the moderation suggested seems sensible... but i'm not a doctor and i've not see this guy so if a doctor says stop he should probably consider it.

if its stuck at 1.020 and it started like most apple juice at around the mid 40's it should be 3 - 3.5% ish, tey letting it brew a little more in the warm 18 degrees+ if you can.

saying all that, it'll be drinkable if you want to sample it. Stick some in a bottle and see what its like in a few weeks if you don't like what it tastes like now.

Er....... just measured it again and it was 1002, not 1020

Not working in the morning so will stick it in some bottles and hide it in the shed in case i drink it by accident - it smells like stink bombs to me at the moment

Think I need to invest in a decent yeast!

Yeah, some yeast stink to high heavens when they're doing the job fermenting. Some lager yeast smell like rotten eggs

The TC i've been making recently have fermented out fine but are still cloudy so i've transfered them into 2 l pet bottles to carb up/clear. Once they settle out I may be tempted to transfer them again to get the alcohol off the yeast.

glad that your TC is down to bottling gravity, bottling is fun and the thought that'll keep you going through it is that you get to drink it all soon.
