Simple Lager

Post by Oggy' Bar » Sun Mar 30, 2008 1:22 am

Oggy's bar needs a lager to stop the Sprogg and his mates drinking my Good ale :x

I would like to brew something with fairly simple ingredients and at reasonable temperature (18-20C) that tastes like a commercial Lager.. Carlsberg, Bud, Heineken.... The sort of thing that tastes good on a hot summers day when it's chilled to 10C or less.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a recipe?

HH, I am not sure they will appreciate a quality tasting lager but I'll give it a go.

Which yeast do you recommend and is a low fermentation temperature critical, I'll struggle to get below 18C

I have always used Saflager dry yeast in the lagers/pilsners that I have brewed, info Here.

It is recommended to use it between 9c-15c, ideally 12c. I usually brew lager in the cooler months of the year because of this. I sometimes struggle to brew at the recommended temp myself, I believe that using this yeast over 18c will not ruin the brew, but it could lead to an ale like character rather than lager if it is fermenting too long above the recommended temperature.

Coopers Bavarian Pilsner + 1kg spray malt produces something like the you're after, a no nonsense clean uncomplicated lager. It'll be more expensive that a grain brew but will take you a fraction of the time.
