AG #2- DC Gold

Post by kitoog » Sun Apr 06, 2008 5:06 pm

Well done my second AG today and was another successful day. Got it down to 6 hours. I used the same malts as AT for his Fools Gold which was
very nice but used different hops and s04 yeast. Got 20 litres in fermenter at 1050 so well happy with that. I might get another coolbox to store my sparge water so I can begin heating the wort straight away with my boiler.

22 litres . OG 1048
Mash at 67c 1 hour
Maris Otter 4.6 Kg
Melanoidin 250g
Carapils 100g
Biscuit 100g

Tettnanger(4.8%) 60g @60 min
Fuggles (4.7%) 14g @15 min
Fuggles (4.7%) 7g @1 min
Williamette (5%) 7g @1 min
Yeast s04

cheers Daab, i would not use handle anyway. would a coolbox keep 20 litres of water at about 80c for about 1 hour? I am looking at speeding up the process already :D

Derek i would expect it to lose at least a few degrees if not more, why not buy a second kettle for heating the water?

ye AT, was thinking about that too. well i will probably get a new boiler or a €20 coolbox from argos.

I'd go for the kettle and if in the future during a boil your boiler packs up you'll have a spare. Plus it saves all the messing about of drawing off water and re boiling to try to hit the right heat again. Another option would be to buy a SS pot off Nordic Optical on e bay and throw it up on the cooker to bring it up to temp and it would be out of your way when you're brewing, it might even prove to be cheaper than a kettle

I'd ideally use something with an element in it as an HLT if I could but the other day I used an insulated fermenter and just poured in a kettle full of boiling water when I was ready and it took it back up t0 75 degrees plus. The next time I used the 5 litre spouted jug and got it higher. One day if I make a funky boiler myself I may use my current boiler as the HLT but not just yet.
