Half Bottle-Half Keg

Post by Duncndisorderly » Mon Apr 07, 2008 2:40 pm

I think i'm probably gonna answer my own question here but what the heck.
I currently have a sherwood IPA in the fermenter and i plan of transferring it later this week to a pressure barrel, but id also like to bottle about half of it at the same time.
Im happy enough doing this but i was just wondering if when i transfer the remaining half to the keg i should add a shot of co2 to the barrel aswell?
i think i should, though i must admit i dont really know why, its kinda a gut feeling i have
any ideas? :?:

Add a few bursts of co2,leave it for 10 minutes then purge the keg to rid it of o2 then put a few more bursts of co2 into the keg.

Blasting in some CO2 removes the oxygen which stales beer. Blast it in and the CO2 will settle on the bottom of the vessel. When you open the lid the oxygen will be forced out leaving a carpet of CO2. Close the lid add a few more squirts and repeat.

Just to whole heartedly agree with Duncnd's last sentiment there

Lads: Might this displacement - of which I was never told, in my Rotakeg days! - have been a possible source of the eternal and unfixable leak in that 'cursed' barrel?

Just passingly curious.
