Nut Brown Ale recipe anyone?

Post by Martin the fish » Tue Apr 08, 2008 2:31 pm

Out of all my kits i done the best was Muntons IPA(after 6 weeks conditioning) and a nut brown ale. Nut brown was great after only a couple of weeks and was consumed in another.

I'd like to do an AG nut brown. Anyone got a recipe or can steer me in the direction of one? :)

There are two brown ale recipes in Zainasheff's book. One is a souped up Mann's brown ale and the other is a Newcastle Brown ale style beer.

But i ain't got any books on brewing. We have over 10,000 books and not one on brewing. Durden Park book should be arriving soon. We have run out of space for books. Which is why we want to move to a bigger house. :D

I'm sure you have done a Nut Brown SF. Wanna slide a recipe over to NZ :D

Curiously enough I've never done one. Thinking about it though....

I just posted an extract version of Wheeler's Samuel Smiths Nut Brown in this thread:

To convert to all grain you could switch the extract for 4.6 kilos of Maris Otter and mash it all at 68C.

Martin it is worth remembering that many a Brown Ale is a mild by another name(and usualy bottled, with a higher level of carbonation)

Then again Mysterios post of Wheelers Nut brown looks darn tasty. Though with the the hoping levels it will need a bit longer than a mild to condition.

I've been (very) happily drinking the Nutty Man Brown from Z's book. It is quite nice, even with just extract and specialty grains.

Here's the recipe I brewed, though it is slightly different than Mr. Z's:

450g Crystal 60L
284g Crystal 120L
170g Pale Chocolate
114g Regular Chocolate
225g Special Roast
3kg Pale Malt

Challenger hops boiled 60 min, to obtain about 18 IBUs. Maybe mash around 67-68c, and ferment with a starter of Fuller's yeast (WL002 is what I used--and I think the starter is necessary).

Good luck with whatever you brew, Martin.

I didn't know about the mild/brown ale thing, thanks.
Monk-that recipe looks like a good un for me-i have all that 'in stock' more or less. Less the yeast. I have so4, 1968 and thames valley.

I think you might be able to substitute brown malt for Special Roast

ok, not much can be done, maybe some from of high crystal malt may give the sweet, toasty flavor
