05/04/08 - Ford Sierra pale ale (extract)

On saturday morning I "had the urge" and literally pulled out the last dregs of what I had in the cupboard and put it through beersmith (apart from some chock malt) to come up with something:

Batch Size: 11.50 L
Boil Size: 13.50 L

Ingredients

1.00 kg Light Dry Extract (8.0 EBC) Dry Extract 71.94 %
0.22 kg Amber Dry Extract (24.6 EBC) Dry Extract 15.83 %
0.10 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (120.0 EBC) Grain 7.19 %
0.07 kg Dememera Sugar (3.9 EBC) Sugar 5.04 %

20.00 gm Cascade [6.50 %] (60 min) Hops 27.4 IBU
20.00 gm Cascade [6.50 %] (30 min) Hops 21.1 IBU
10.00 gm Cascade [6.50 %] (0 min) Hops -

Est Original Gravity: 1.041 SG
Measured Original Gravity: 1.041!! Shock horror, it was right.
Est Final Gravity: 1.011
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 3.97 % Actual Alcohol by Vol: 0.65 %
Bitterness: 48.5 IBU
Est Color: 13.7 EBC

These photos arent wildly exciting (no brew porn) but I guess they show you dont need that much to make beer from extract.

The mash tun

Oh no! I haven't allowed for the 'angle of the hops' in my IBU calculations! #-o Or whether they dangle to left or to the right.
