Glad you finally got around to it - I was wondering when you would. As coincidence should have it I had the last of that batch tonight too.

Strange about the growths on the inside of the bottle. It was bottled in July so I'm not sure if this is down to my cleansing or if things happen over the long months.

I have another batch in the fermenter at the moment as it has become a favourite and if you indulge a "blow my own trumpet" moment the beer got 3rd at the SCB competition on January.

Wez's Glasshouse Porter

I tanned this one during half time of the football. Certainly better than a pie and a bovril

The beer was a very deep red and poured with a nice 1cm head. This didn't hand around but the beer kept a pleasant carbonation right through. The nose was full of the roast malt and hints of coffee and certainly drew me in.

On tasting I was initially hit with the sweet malt that was balanced with the bitterness from the roast and chocolate malts. I also got a taste of bitter oranges (not sure if you have noticed this Wez?). The hop bitterness came in at the end and cleansed the palate. The beer although full, in both flavour and alcohol (5.5abv), had a lovely clean and sessionable quality.

Overall I really enjoyed the porter and was a fine example of a style of beer that I am becoming more and more fond of.

I'm quite pleased today, one of by beers "Big Kenny" went in front of a commercial brewery's tasing panel.

Here's what they said

Any carpenters listening? Door modification required at Wez's house, recent entirely justified head swelling has occured!

Cracking feedback, very well done Wez. =D>

That's a great review of which you can be rightly proudly Wez, and from a brewery that produces some of my favourite beers to boot =D>

Good stuff Wez! I've had the pleasure of sampling Big Kenny, it is a fine beer. Have to remember to pick up some Styrian Goldings... if they're not extinct yet.

Any idea what exactly they mean by "yeast bite" by the way?

Wez's Randy Sparrow

Last night I had the pleasure of sampling my first AG from another member.

Image

It came with a nicely designed label & was left undisturbed for a few weeks to allow it to settle.

Bear with me 'cos I ain't no Roger Protz.

On opening there was a surprisingly loud fizz and a small, tight head formed on pouring. There was a very faint hoppy aroma although I couldn't discern which one(s). The initial taste was of a strong, but not overpowering bitterness which gave way to a nice balance of hops/malt with a hint of citrus.

SWMBO commented that it had a Timothy Taylor Landlord type taste & 'Didn't have an aftertaste like some of yours' hrmmph

Image

The head soon disappeared but didn't detract from my enjoyment.

Image

There was a very slight haze but it was certainly clearer than a lot of my bottled brews.

All in all a very well put together brew.

Cheers Wez !

Or, it's so big it declared a coup and now has to be referred to as the Independent Republic of Wez's Head.

Wez is sending me a few to try - looking forward to the 'evaluation' :)
