brew evening 11-4 Porter

Post by prolix » Fri Apr 11, 2008 9:56 pm

Thought I'd throw a brew on this evening as there was nothing better to do. Was thinking about a brown ale or even something with first gold, but decided on a porter in memory of my irish godmother as I found out she had pasted away when making up me mind.

so here it is Ballymena Porter

5.2 Maris otter
0.4 crystal
0.2 chocolate
0.2 black

80g fuggles in the runnings (might be a bit low at 44 might need some more to balance)

mashed at 65

single batch sparge to try and get a fuller malty taste

Boil 60 mins

Whirlfloc 10 mins (no need really as no one will see any haze but I am a creature of habit.

Boiled the water and added campden tablet, did not bother to remove precipitate as it is insoluble

mash went well, did not compensate sparge water for increased grain bill so only managed to get 24l out at 54, ho hum!

Boil on at the moment going well, fuggles are smell very nice

might throw some late hops in to get to 50-55 any ideas?

Done and done got 17l @ 1060 in the end so efficiency was a mare but was a single batch so no worries.

can't wait to taste it now it smelt so good boiling

I threw in 16 g of fuggles at 10 mins and another 14 at 70c in the cool as putting 14g of fuggles back on it's own seemed pointless.

Nothing as bad as losing a granny, almost tore me up when I lost mine some years ago, hope your porter is a triumph and you can drink it in her memory :D
