First AG brew with pics

Post by ni9e » Sat Apr 12, 2008 8:49 pm

First off thanks to everyone on this forum for your wealth of knowledge without you guys I'd never have started AG brewing :D

I made a stout which I'm calling Virgin Brew

4Kg Pale crushed malt
500g Roast barley
500g Porrige oats

1.5 oz Fuggle hops full boil
1 oz Target hops full boil
A pinch of Protoflax final 15 mins

90 min mash
90 min boil

Yeast Safale 04

SG 1050 FG 1010

Grains in the mash tun @67c and left wrapped in a duvet for 90 mins

First runnings collected this until it was running clear

Hops ready to be added

Boiling away and the house smells great

Draining into FV ready to cool

Cooled to 28c added yeast and stired like mad for 5 mins put the lid on and stored somwhere warm for the yeast to do its job

Just over six hours from start to finish and no problems and I'm well chuffed :pink: I can't wait to start supping this

Great pics !

Any reason you use the immersion in the FV rather than the boiler ?

That's fine :)

Perfectly OK to chill in the boiler. If you pop the immersion in the boil while there's still 10 mins or so left of the boil then any bugs on the copper are killed. Plus, the cold break material is formed in the boiler and (as Si mentions) is then filtered out by the hop bed leaving you with less "crud" in the FV. Something to consider for AG #2.

Well done though, looks like a good first AG brewday 8)
