I doubt the calculation is "crap". More likely the original or final gravity reading was incorrect.
I've used a refractometer (and the same calculation

) for 18 months and it's always tallied with the hydrometer whenever I've checked it. There must be something wrong with a reading, a fault with the refractometer or Scarer's beer's been infected with a wild yeast
