'Pitching' is the act of adding the yeast to the unfermented beer (or wort) & the 'gravity' is the relative density of the brew (relative to the density of water). Take the gravity measurement before pitching the yeast (this is known as the starting or original gravity). As fermentation proceeds the gravity will fall (as the sugars in the wort are turned into alcohol which is less dense) & will give an indication when fermentation has finished. The gravity at this point is known as the final gravity.

First of all, welcome to the forum! 8)

The links above are a great place to start, you shouldn't go too far wrong.

You'll find that most of the strange sounding brewing terms used are really quite simple once you know them, and there's always someone about happy to help with anything you don't understand. :wink:

Sparge, its my favorite brewing word because it sounds dirty

eg. "yeah i sparged it good and proper" :wink:
