brewday 17 Apr: Summer Ale

Post by mb » Thu Apr 17, 2008 2:48 pm

day off today so thought i'd brew something for when summer arrives,
based on randy mosher's contemporary summer ale recipe

19L
3000g Maris Otter
1000g Pilsner Malt
350g Wheat Malt
90 min mash at 65C

batch sparge

an hour's boil with
Challenger AA 7%
60 mins 35g
30 mins 15g
5 mins 15g

1x whirfloc

WLP013 yeast- first attempt with liquid yeast, very interested to see how that goes.

aimed for 19L @ 1048 but got 18L @ 1046, so a slightly disappointing mid-60s % efficiency. on the plus side, i got a great cold break, it seemed to coagulate into a big lump just under the surface as the wort cooled.
Drinking: Brown Ale
Conditioning: Pale Ale- Target, Fuggles, Goldings
Fermenting:
Up Next: Abbey Single

Glad it went fairly well - at least it's safely in the fermenter.

As an aside (and this isn't a personal criticism), I've never seen the point of 30 minute hop additions. To my mind it's a waste of hops - you don't get good bittering as the boil time is fairly short and the flavour would be better if you hopped later. There's plenty of recipes out there that do it but that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Looks good! I should try some of the recipes from Radical Brewing.

that's a fair point on hop additions - i was just following mr mosher, after a spell of making up my own recipes- none of which have included 30 min additions now i think of it- i thought i'd go back to following the experts (or supposed experts :) ) to see what difference it makes. i guess the proof will be in the tasting.

I am intrigued by the use of the pilsner malt, as I have some that needs using up :-k
