19-04-2008: S-W's Schiehallion

Post by spearmint-wino » Sat Apr 19, 2008 1:46 pm

The weather has been kinder than predicted so I'm well on the way to the 'sort of lager' I was posting about yesterday. 90 min boil 'cos its a lager so I've time to put a brewday post together.

Here are the numbers, its basically Marc Ollosson's recipe:

Schiehallion
23-A Specialty Beer

Image

Size: 23 L

Original Gravity: 1.050
============#===================
Terminal Gravity: 1.012
==============#=================
Color: 3.5 (1.0 - 50.0)
========#=======================
Alcohol: 5.03% (2.5% - 14.5%)
===========#====================
Bitterness: 35.45 (0.0 - 100.0)
=============#==================

Ingredients:
5000 g Lager Malt
270 g English Wheat Malt
25 g Challenger (6.1%) - added during boil, boiled 90 min
20 g Hallertau Hersbruck (3.8%) - added during boil, boiled 90 min
40 g Hallertau Hersbruck (3.8%) - added during boil, boiled 15 min
40 g Hallertau Hersbruck (3.8%) - steeped after boil
Nottingham Yeast

Currently halfway through the boil which I got 30.5l down to 1.015 for, yeast is munching on some boiled wort taken 10 mins in, the smell from the boiler is great, maybe the hops have kept better than some of the others I've been using recently.

I got a new camera this week so have been trying it out and messing around with the settings for the brewday pics which will be along shortly... 8)

Here we go with a bit of 'experimental' brewday photography... this one comes with a warning sticker for dial-up users.

Recircling first runnings from the mash (today I discovered taping the tinfoil to the tun really makes all the difference ;)):

Great pics David Bailey! Does your camera have a shine accentuating setting to best capture that nice shiny boiler? :lol: Looks like a succesful day all round. 8)

Seems more like art than most the stuff in the Tate Modern to me!

Nice brew.

RAH

SI angry!
(and drunk)

Give me 10 days, just ten days to shift this brew from the fermentation box, and I'll show you pictures!!! Gee willickers next brew I'll give you more pictures than you could point a sanitized brewers paddle at! Full step by step breakdown of the action. Scratch and sniff interaction (if it's invented by Friday week).

I do of course realise that Wino being a far more calm, considered, and levelheaded fellow (read scaredy-cat, wuss, knows my raw gritty brew journalism will win the public's vote over his wishy-washy liberal tree hugging B&W stuff) will back down now from such a brewday picture posting challenge with a poll to decide the outcome.

(Daab, you've stirred this, but you meant to didn't you. :wink: )

So come on SW let us know if your running scared - as Delia said - LET'S BE 'AVIN YOU!

Your next brewday, VS, my next brewday...........ILLUSTRATED.....the public decide.

(all with respect, if you fancy it, no pressure, I liked your pictures too, be gentle on me if you say yes 8-[ )
