Made up my Tox Caxton ale yesterday lunchtime with the 500g of Spraymalt and 1KG Beer Kit Enhancer. I used a Muntons ale yeast as Tom Caxton yeast was missing. All went well apart from when I added the DME etc. there were a few rock hard small clumps of DME that would not disolve and needed to be fished out. Not sure why this happened as the Beer Kit Enhancer and Spaymalt was well within sell by date and obviously sealed (however been in kitchen cupboard a year).
Anyway.......came down stairs this morning and checked the brew and noticed that not much seems to have happened. Just a thin light brown froth on the top and not the usual signs of wild frothing. I am using a heat mat as kitchen can get bit cold. I have given it a gentle stir. If there is still no sign of life in 12/24 hours, am I safe adding another yeast?
Apologises as I am sure this is such a regular question and I am sure there are a hundred other posts that I could have checked first!
Quick Question
personally I'd give the timescale you've mentioned before I got worried. I take it there are no indications that you've missed all the action? If nothing is happening 24-48 hours after pitching the yeast you could try giving it a gentle stir. If this doesn't do the trick, try adding another yeast, it certainly won't hurt.
Thats my view anyway, I'm sure some more experienced brewers will rouse themselves later to give you a more definitive reply
At the end of the day, don't worry, it'll most likely be fine in the end.
