Can i make it even stronger?

Post by MartialAnt » Tue Apr 29, 2008 6:47 pm

My Muntons IPA has slowed down in the FV. Not worried, nothing wrong with it but i want it to be even stronger. Can i drop more glucose in it with another sachet of yeast? Will it work?

I want this brew to make me stagger sideways & fall over a lot.

I'm not sure that it'd work but can see no reason why it shouldn't. However, be careful; too much extra fermentables can knock the taste sideways.

If all you're after is knee-walking, mind-wiping alcohol, search for Turbo Cider Threads...

agreed with PMH0810....
you may ruin the taste.
Give TC a try  its not just a normal cider that you may be thinking of...you only gotta get past the 1st pint and youll be fine - trust me

so if i want it to be super strength do i at the start add the extra glucose and pitch it with more yeast?

I want an ale that'll make me fall down & make women look beautiful quickly.

you would be better off adding less water than more sugar, that way you increase the Alcohol wihtout throwing off the hop balance. Mix up a 23lt batch to 16lt or 18lt instead.

but i want quantity as well as quality. Im a greedy sod.
I dont mind boiling up some hops to compensate for the loss through the kit if more sugar is added.

best idea yet

easy, cheap and has the desired result - and wont mess up the flavour too much 8)

P.S. TC is a better option for the result
P.P.S - then again 1L of 40% vodka would only raise a 22L brew by 1.5% :-k - not that great after all!

If you want stuff to drink in pints just to make you fall over why not try brewing wine and drinking it in pints? Or maybe doubling up on brews like barley wine to get 40 pints in a batch?

Seriously, too much extra fermentable will ruin the taste of your beer. However, that does not necessarily mean it will be undrinkable. If you do try it, please keep updating this thread so we can all share the results?

I too like strong ale as I feel it tastes better. I do prefer stuff in the 5-6% range for everyday drinking and because HB takes 5-8 weeks to turn around a drinkable result I want it to be tasty-guaranteed. When I fancy stronger than that I buy off the shelf (although I will soon be buying the short-length kits to try a short brew).

I brewed a batch of Dogbolter to 20 pints and it's taking forever to condition - still too sweet. It is, however, a little over 7%. Both sweetness and ABV due to extra fermentables.

A 33L or even 50L fermenter wont break the bank so you can buy 2 kits and make 36L (or less) for added strength, just right for 2 cornies.
Just found a shop near'ish to me. A 50L FV £22.99 . Is that reasonable?

I would like a glass carboy as they look pretty. 54L for £61.00 price not a problem. But i think i'll wait till im better at brewing. Think i'll trawl the car bootys just incase i spot one though.

Rather than 1 50L FV which is going to weight 110lbs and be very difficult to move why not get 2 25lt ones from wilcos for £7.99 each.

Got 25L FV all ready but DaaB said make a single 36L brew. So a 50L FV would be plenty big enough.

Sod it im gonna go get 1 in the morning. The shop has a big selection (24) of yeasts as well.
