Summer Ale (based on Northdown wonder)

Post by eddnix » Tue May 06, 2008 8:37 pm

This week I am mostly supposed to be studying for imminent exams - next week in fact. As a result I decided today would be a good day to scratch my brewing itch and forget about beer for the rest of the week (hmm, yeah, OK).

So here we are with a brew based on Northdown Wonder.

MO 5.500 kg
Medium Crystal 0.15kg
Torrified Wheat 0.15kg

Northdown - 8.4% - 57g - 90 mins
Styrian - 4.0% - 20g - 20 mins
Styrian - 4.0% - 50g - 1 min

Protafloc tab @ 15 mins
Safale S-04

The styrians were pre-packaged Youngs hops so as an experiment I decided to add an extra 20g at 20 mins, for my taste it can hardly turn out too hoppy :D

so on with the show:

All in all, not a bad day. First time I've batch sparged (thanks for the calculator Daab!). I lost two litres of top up wort for the boil to a back-stroke swimming fly - I thought , much like people slipping on banana skins that the fly scenario had to be an urban myth, but alas no.

If you are starting at this time of night there won't be much studying done tomorrow!

Have fun

Haha, I've been building a boiler in my head all week for the same reason, started ordering parts today. Only a two-hour exam tomorrow morning.

Hope the brew's tasty, should be good around results time for celebrations or commiserations

Interesting, what made you add the Torrified Wheat? I made it the standard way yesterday and am anxious to see how it turns out. Have you made it before and how did it taste?

Edit: just looked through your pictures and I am a little more concerned than I was previously, my wort was WAY darker than that.

That was the speediest brew known to man :=P

(I had to edit some pics due to size, hence only one pic when you posted!)

Nice photos - apart from the last one, maybe it's my monitor but it looks like one of those big luminous green glow sticks :o

I noticed just before I posted this that you did the same brew yesterday 8)

I only added the wheat because I have quite a bit kicking around, also AFAIK, it aids head retention.
