Even Bigger Big Kenny 09/05/08

Tomorrow evening i'll be doing my first 50L brewlength with heaps of thanks to Steve Flack for his generosity for the 66L tun and huge immersion cooler 8) . I'm using a 60L H&G FV converted to a boiler with 2x 3kw elements and I'm going with a beer that I know I like.

I've based it on 70% efficiency & the plan is to stop sparging at 1.020 but I'll see how much I have collected at that point and decide then.

Might be a long night!

Anyway this is whats going into it:

Brewlength - 50L
Target OG (at 70%) 1.047
Target IBU ~31
Fermenting with 4x S04

10.4kg Pale Malt (2 Row) UK (5.9 EBC) Grain 92.47 %
540g Wheat, Torrified (3.3 EBC) Grain 4.76 %
150g Caramel/Crystal Malt - 60L (118.2 EBC) Grain 1.33 %
110g Roasted Barley (591.0 EBC) Grain 0.95 %
50g Chocolate Malt (886.5 EBC) Grain 0.48 %

126.00 gm Fuggles [5.50 %] (60 min) Hops 31.1 IBU
40.00 gm Styrian Goldings [3.30 %] (15 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops -
40.00 gm Styrian Goldings [3.30 %] (0 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops -

Wish me luck with my first big batch guys!

There will be pics

Good luck with your brew Wez. I've been doing the 10 gallon stock beers recently (although undocumented on the forum) and I can tell you it's well worth it if you like a particular style :D

Not an uneventful evening

Ended up bang on what I wanted tho 2x 25L at 1.047 remains to be seen what it will taste like of course but hey, it's beer! Done and dusted by 23:30, nice to get twice the amount for about the same effort 8)

Lots of things changed in the process for me last night. Used a larger tun for the first time, used a larger boiler for the first time and batch sparged for the first time. With the exception of finding out that I hadn't fitted the hop strainer with 60L at 85 degrees and having to empty the boiler, fit it and refill the boiler all went quite soothly.

Rather than add a first edition after mashing I added it to the initial mash liquor so that meant doughing into 45L!
Doughing in ~12kg grain was also a bit of an effort!

As I only have one boiler I had to use 2x 33L FV's fo collecting the run offs, it was nice once the liquor for the 2nd batch had gone in to get the boiler going 8) I'll batch sparge again.

Some pic's

60L Boiler, this is the 60L FV from H&G for £20 that I swapped 2x 3kw elements and boiler tap into.
