False bottom material

Post by retourrbx » Mon May 12, 2008 7:58 pm

Could I use a teflon (I think) pizza tray from wilko's - or would it be bad for the beer bringing it upto 100', in contact with the stainless steel of my boiler?

The holes on this are a bit big perhaps?? but there was one made from the same material without any holes so I could put my own in there with a drill...

Cheers - I'll look for something else then - where do people get the steel plates from?

fair enough - I was looking at steel as my boiler goes on the gas and didn't fancy the plastic being in contact with the boiler floor whilst on there. I'll have a look on ebay :)

I've currently got a rolled up splatter guard doing the job but it gets clogged up with the trub so I have to agitate the wort around it to get it to go through, it was endless last brew - do you think this be solved with the Brupaks strainer design?

I'll have a go at making one at work with the drill press and some 15mm copper pipe - thanks for the advice

Groggy stainless steel drinks tray from Ikea (£5.99) , cut the rim off and fits a FL33 burco perfectly. Next drill lots of 3- 4 mm holes in it. Next step is to attach three 80x 6 mm stainless steel bolts to give the clearance, then make a handle - I used an old canteen knife bent 180 degrees and bolt that to the centre.
If you have a belt sander it will take all the rough edgess off and removes loose bits of swarf etc real quick. :D

Type in perforated 304 into e-bay and see what comes up

It's the stuff I made my hop fb from and it's identical material to my false bottom in my mash tun.

The only problem is you haven't linked to an actual picture file, e.g.

I have used it for about 10 brews and it seems to work well in general, although in the boil the wort level does rise and fall a couple of inches  . I assume this is due to the false bottom needing a few more holes?

I think you are right - it was alarming at first as it looks like a proper volcano when boiling and with the level going up and down a couple of inches as well!
