First AG into a Corny

Post by Talisman » Tue May 13, 2008 3:10 pm

Well its all coming together with my home brew setup and Bar.

I have a couple of brews nearly ready to go into the cornie and i just wanna ensure im going to do this right.

1) The only way i see how to steralise the corny is to half fill with sterilizing fluid, cap it, add pressure and allow some fluid to come out the OUT pipe.

is that how you do it?

2) when i come to fill the Corny How do i tell how far to fill it? I know they are suppose to be 19Ltrs only and ive brewed between 20 - 23. Do i just leave a few inches as i see no line?
And when i fill it do you add sugar to prime? Or just add CO2? Or both??
I know Daab said it wants to be at about 10-12 psi.
Do i then need to keep checking the Pressure for the next few weeks and topping back up as nessisary?

Thank you (god it will be great to sup my first pint from these)

I put in Youngs Sterilizer and Cleaner into these when i first got them to get rid of the original smell. Was going to do it again (obviously) before use.

Is this stuff ok, or do i really need to get Soda Crystals and re do and then use the iodophor?

IF i do then thats fine ill do it no probs (i can Just get my arm in there).

But if what i have is good enough then no point buying something else lol.

Thanks as always.

I do exactly what Daab says. If i've brewed in there previously I also take the posts and pipes out, remove the seals and soak, scrub and rinse those too. If you want to use the Young's stuff as a non-soak cleaner though, that's fine. It's more expensive than soda crystals but good stuff. Needs a good final rinse with cold before moving on to the no-rinse swirl and pressure.

You'll probably get away with it, they're sturdy contraptions.

Hop & Grape and the rest of the online HBS gang sell iodophor.

to clean the dip tubes I thread garden wire loops down them then attach some bounty (does not come apart) kitchen roll into the loop and pull it back through, repeat until the paper is clean.

also regurading the gas dip tube I cut mine all in half so I can get in more beer but you have to clean the cut well

the rest has been siad by wiser men than me already

oh and flush cornie with CO2 before you fill it then if there are splashes there will be very little oxygen to be absorbed

I like to pressurise them then vent via pressure valve a couple of times to remove oxygen after filling aswell

well i have my soda crystals and iodophor now.

with the soda is it a case of add in a liter or so of water and soda, swirl and wipe around, then rinse straight out and do the iodophor, or do i need to leave it in there a while?

and the temp of the cories will be room temp, as im passing the beer through a maxi 210.

Oh what do you clean the pipes out with? proper beer pipe cleaning stuff?
