Hi all.... I bet this is a really stupid question and I reckon I am going to be blasted BUT .... what is Real Ale and just what is the difference between real ale and normal ale.
Take care.... Frederick
What is the difference
CAMRA’s (Campaign for Real Ale) official definition of Real Ale is, “beer brewed from traditional ingredients, matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the use of extraneous carbon dioxide.â€
ie not keg/bottled beers that have been chill filtered or pasturised and artificially carbonated.
Real ale is normally served from a cask with yeast intact, or a bottle with yeast in it.
(you can get bright real ale for quick consumption - although CAMRA might argue about it)

Hope you dont mind can I add a bit to this question?
I believe the CO2 is there to keep the oxygen out so the beer doesnt go off and stays nice and fresh.
If this is correct then how do the cask conditioned ales kept and served in a wooden barrel stay fresh? They dont have the CO2 topped up as it is served!
