Adding hops (ooops)

Post by Gruesome » Mon Jun 02, 2008 11:49 pm

Hi all, things have changed since I last made my own brew. Just bought a Tom Caxton kit which I started yesterday. I decided to check the instructions again today and realised I didn't add the hops at stage 4 as suggested. Is it possible to add them now or am I too late? It may have helped to give some clue as to when to add hops in the main instructions rather than putting it on the back page as an afterthought. No matter, live and learn.

Thanks for your prompt response. The sachet contains the 'Caxton hop enhancement system' and was recommended to be added at the same time as the sugar after the boiling water, to disolve. Apparrently, it's optional how much you add but they suggest up to half a sachet to slightly increase bitterness. In this case, would I need to dissolve what I need to add in a little hot water and allow it to cool before adding to the brew, or just chuck it in as it is?

as an alternative, you could always get some hops and dry hop the barrel (thats if you barrel), or use a 2nd fermentor and dry hop that.

i too have never heard of this oil business, seems to be exclusive to the kit you have used.

Thanks again folks, I'm just going to chuck it in and hope for the best. I don't have a clue about 'barrelling', I'm kinda new to this brewing but I intend to delve into it a bit more. All the best

Cheers
