No Regrets (Marc Olloson) 12/06/08 with pics!

I made a yeast starter the other day from the dregs of a couple of hopback summer lightning bottles along with dregs from a couple of bottles from the Oakleaf Brewery in Gosport, and as the starter seems to be going well I thought I should have a go and brew something with it.

I also wanted to use up some of my older hops and this recipe seemed to tick all the boxes. Plus if the yeast doesn't turn out very well and I have to throw the batch away then I won't feel too bad about the waste of hops, being the price they are at the moment.

This is the recipe for a total of 19lts at 85% efficiancy

Looks like a nice recipe Scarer. The Challenger + Northdown combo is one I'm hoping to try soon.

Hope all goes well

Thanks Daab

The tun not as neat as some but I'm going over the gaffer with some silver duck tape as some of the gaffer as already starting to come unstuck, it should look very nice then!

Nice tidy set up and clear run off there scarer. A good looking signature too. If this is another good'un will you be keeping a bottle or six for Sutton, or is a bit early to think of that yet?
Thanks for the heads up on Father's Day!

Thanks Si

Well it's a bit of an unknown 'cos of the yeast I'm using. I'm looking at it as a kind of an adventure

Well on monitoring the gravity I decided to go the full 90 on the boil which meant my hops went in with 25mins to go rather than 15 so I added a further 10g of Northdown with 5 mins left just for good luck [-o<

Here's the chiller in for sanitizing

Image

And this is my 500ml yeast starter

Image

I have a 7g packet of Coopers Ale yeast that I might chuck in as well 'cos I'm not sure that a 500ml starter will be enough.......any comments?

So the boil is finished and I have 22.5lts (before cooling shrinkage) at 12 brix 1047 which i'm very pleased with.

At the moment I'm resisting the temptation to chuck more hops in for extra aroma as it reaches 80C, maybe 14g Goldings that I've got left in a bag? Oh what's a girl to do

Shall I?

Doh! it's down to 40C so I don't think so
